For the past year, I’ve been known as the ‘girl who takes the minutes’ at the Council meetings. Upon returning to my home last July, I started attending the Council meetings, trying to be very involved in discussions about the devastating flooding that ripped apart my hometown. I became immersed in a wide range of matters. I have been sharing what I learn after each meeting with my community; a fragile community that is still building back, a busy community full of young families, a strong community that cares. This was my way of helping, at a time when I felt completely helpless.
I believe that Sumas is on its way to being built back stronger. I want to continue the momentum by sitting at the table of these council meetings, instead of in the audience. Being able to advocate for what is right, for residents and businesses alike. I want to maintain the open level of communication that I have brought to the community, and continue to be a listening ear. Sumas is my hometown and I want us all to be involved in its future.
