So what are the local county elections really about?

  • How you respond to the Hirst Decision
  • How you see the government by moratorium (Cherry Point)?
  • Does the Council Represent you?
  • Rural vs Urban Way of Life

The four Independents and their opponents:

3rd District Whatcom County Council Seat Voted on by 3rd District Registered Voters Only

Tyler Byrd

District 3 is the Dark Green on the East(Right)

Rebecca Boonstra

Tyler Byrd is Endorsed By the 6 Small Town Mayors, the 2 42nd Legislative District Representatives, and Recommended by the Local GOP.  A full List is here.

Rebecca Boonstra is Endorsed by the Sierra Club, Washington Conservation Voters, and the Whatcom Democrats.  A full list is here.

Between the 2 of these candidates Tyler Byrd represents more of a philosophical change than Rebecca Boonstra. He backs the Republican-led bipartisan Proposal on Hirst in the State Legislature that Democrats refused to vote on. And his response to a question about moratorium government was “Definitely NOT”.

Mary Kay Robinson

Barry Buchanan

The Council At-Large Seat is voted on by all registered voters in Whatcom County.

Mary Kay Robinson- is Endorsed By the 6 Small Town Mayors, the 2 42nd Legislative District Representatives, and Recommended by the Local GOP See the full list here

Barry Buchanan– is the incumbent councilman assigned to District 1 after the 2015 realignment election… I cannot find any online endorsements for his campaign. But I received a mailer stating he is endorsed by the Democratic Party. His webiste is here

Between the two candidates- Mary Kay Robinson represents a change from incumbent Barry Buchanan. She is passionate in her support for a vote in the legislature on the Hirst Decision and responds in disdain to governing by Moratorium.

Dan Robbins

Dan Robbins

Michael Shepard

The Port Commissioner Commissioner Port of Bellingham seat District 1 Seat is voted on by all registered voters in Whatcom County.

Dan Robbins- incumbent  is Endorsed By the 6 Small Town Mayors, the 2 42nd Legislative District Representatives, and Recommended by the Local GOP on their slate card. The full list of endorsements is here. scroll down to see entire list.

Michael Shepard– is best known for his spectacular failed politically motivated recall effort of Sen. Doug Ericksen last January. He is endorsed by the Sierra Club, Washington Conservation Voters and most of the sitting County Council.  The full list of endorsements is here.

Between the two candidates- Dan Robbins– incumbent is a more conservative candidate than Michael Shepard  and sees his job as a positive business force for the county.  He has been an advocate for Bellingham jobs and getting the GP Site online with a vision for our port area. He is able to work with all other public officials and is even endorsed by sitting Bellingham city councilman Gene Knutsen and others.

Ken Bell

Barry Wenger

Ken Bell- has a business vision for the Port of Bellingham and can work with many in the county to get the job done; Barry Wenger seems to be endorsed by the Environmental Industrial Complex and has been a member of the RE-Sources organization.
