Russ Pfeiffer-Hoyt – Mount Baker School Board District #5
I have served on Mount Baker School Board for 24 years. I serve as board president. I will be the only board member who has served more than two years. My experience is needed to meet our challenging times.
Student safety is my highest priority. As a parent and grandparent, I know how important safety is to every parent.
Two main priorities that I have are improving academic achievement and district finances. Academic achievement starts with Early Education. I helped start our Play and Learn program for preschool parents to learn with their children. In the early grades, we focus on learning to read. Reading is the foundation for all other subjects. I have made sure that our high school schedule includes opportunities for all students to follow their academic and vocational interests.
I work hard to improve our district finances, which is challenging because of unfunded state mandates. For decades, the state took most of our local school timber revenue. I led successful state-wide efforts to fix this, bringing several million dollars back to Mount Baker. I helped start our capital projects program to maintain our buildings.
I am proud of Mount Baker School District. The strength of our district comes from the community’s support. We face many challenges. We don’t choose our challenges, but we do choose how we respond to them. I feel that my experience and dedication are valuable to help our district meet those challenges.
