Derrick Bovenkamp

My name is Derrick Bovenkamp running for Blaine school district board position 4.

I believe I can make a difference. Two major challenges facing our district are declining standardized test scores and the upcoming budget deficit. Our test scores are about 10% lower than pre covid levels which were already not great. We need to turn this around trend around. We should be improving every year. As for the budget we can’t continue the way we have been going. With only 36 more students the budget is up 83% over 10 years compared to a 30% increase on the consumer price index. This isn’t a sustainable level of growth. We need to review the current budget and look for ways to become more efficient with the money we have.

While this is the first time, I’ve ran for office I feel I am suited for the school board position based on my experience on the Board of Directors of a nonprofit electronic medical records users group and also on the Board of Directors of the Mount Baker Council Boy Scouts of America. This is giving me a good background about how good boards operate to serve the community, and in the case of the Mount Baker Council Boy Scouts of America to serve youth. I also have budget experience.

My wife, Colleen and I have 11-year-old son enrolled Blaine middle school, so beyond a personal deep sense of duty you know I’m invested in the district’s success. I’d be honored to have your vote this November.
